Shirt with Huichol drawing of an eclipse (sun and moon).
The sun and the moon by Eliseo Castro Villa
Meaning of the print: The complementary strength of the main masculine and feminine is fundamental in the Huichol culture. The male is associated with the sun "Tau" and female with the moon "Metsa". Here we see that the face of the sun is painted with sacred drawings made with the yellow powder of the "Uxa" root in preparation for the peyote ceremony. The ceremonial name of the sun is "Weiruka".
The moon carries the other important deities; Takutsi Nakawe, Grandmother of growth, represented by his cane; Maxacuaxi, the great-grandfather Deertail and Tatewari, the first fire shaman.
